Kailua Public Library was the first project in the library funded for renovation. It proved so successful and well-received by the public that it inspired the renovation of the Adult section of the library a few years later.
My work included designing and constructing the elements of the reading tree theme. The reading tree theme included the construction and painting of the “tree” which is actually a small room that houses the audio visual equipment and serves as a focal point when children are in the library. There is a small bench for the reader, a mural on most walls, the painted ceiling, dimensional clouds and faux leaves, (which hide a pull down screen) plus tree trunks to disguise posts and a desk to hide computer equipment and wires.
The carpet was also designed in three colors to simulate the shadow of the trees foliage on the ground. The construction and painting phase was completed in 6 weeks, with the help of some community volunteers. Architect was Sheffield & Associates with funding by Pizza Hut.
